The spice of life

Variety is the spice of life! So they say. And it’s true. When it comes to weddings, in my 18 years as a professional photographer, I’ve covered more than my fair share of wedding celebrations from different cultures. And it’s always awesome and always fun. There’s no secret to photographing weddings from different cultures. Three things I would say to bear in mind (1) Do your research – learn as much as you can about what you can expect on the day (2) Be respectful – it may not be how we do it in the west but it’s as important in every way (3) Everyone still wants to have fun and look amazing! Chinese weddings in particular are filled with bizarre looking but really interesting and colourful rituals – like tea ceremonies to pay your respects to your elders. And fireworks. Lots of fireworks. And then there’s the bit where the groom knocks on the bride’s door, to gain ‘access’, only to be set some hilarious challenges by the bridesmaids. Like dancing Gangnam style! A Chinese wedding is really about thanking your elders, looking beautiful, eating well and having the best time possible with family and friends. Throw in some wine fuelled karoake. I can’t think of anything better really 🙂
